Pastor Luke Shares About His Journey to Parish Ministry
Let me introduce myself; I am Pastor Luke C. Emerson, born in the Minneapolis area on March 26, 1971. My parents are Pastor Curt and Jane Emerson who currently Pastor in Wadena, MN. I am married to Kelly (Pletcher) who was born in the same hospital I was, just 4 days earlier. No, we didn’t meet then, but do you get a sense of God’s plan for two special people? There are no coincidences in God's planning. I also have a younger sister by the name of Rebekah and a younger brother, Joshua. I grew up in an atmosphere where our household chose to serve the Lord and to do his will.
Kelly and I really met when we attended the Association Free Lutheran Bible School and after graduation we were married on July 18, 1992.
God’s call into ministry was always there for me but I did everything that I could do to distract my attention away from it. We moved many times for my first career in the Jewelry industry and we lived in Minnesota, Illinois, Missouri, and Florida. During this time God was busy blessing Kelly and me with two “awesome” children, Dylan (17) and Avery (7).
Sometimes God uses some strange ways to get our attention. God used a job promotion in my life to get my attention. It was after that promotion that God really started to work on my life and I began to realize that what He was asking from me was a complete surrender of my life to Him so that He could use me in a very special way.
Kelly and I prayed and talked. We recognized that we were being called to do full time ministry. I applied to the Association Free Lutheran Theological Seminary in Minneapolis and was accepted into their four-year seminary
program. In the fall we moved from Florida to Minnesota and began seminary training.
This was a very special time for the entire family, a time of teaching in so many different areas of our lives. Many opportunities came for sharing my testimony and for sharing God’s Word. We became involved in an AFLC
Home Mission church at Hastings, Minnesota called "The Gathering".
After three years of training we were assigned a position of "Intern Pastor" at St. John's Lutheran Church in Newark, Ohio. We served under the leadership of Pastor Tom Olson as we prepared for ordained ministry. After four years of preparation I was ordained into the ministry and accepted a call to serve Newark Lutheran Church in Newark, Illinois.
It is been a long journey but we are so thankful for the many friends, family and supporters who have encouraged us, prayed for us, and helped us in so many ways.
To God be all the glory for the things he has done!
